Brunswick Coal, the original company behind Downeast Energy & Building Supply, began selling coal and firewood in 1908. In 1931, Allen Morrell bought the company and shortly thereafter added the "& Lumber" and expanded the business to include heating oil, propane and building materials.

A new generation continues growth

In the 1950's Allen's two sons, Bob and Dick, joined him and continued to grow the business. Though partners in all aspects of the business, Bob focused on the building materials end of things and Dick on heating. The company expanded over the years through internal growth and acquisition of other small companies. In addition to the Building Materials yard in Brunswick there are 12 heating companies.

Consolidation results in new names

For many years, the company kept the names of the local heating service companies who joined the ranks and unified them under the banner of "Good Friends Downeast". However, as the service areas grew and customer bases began to overlap, it got very confusing for our customers. Therefore, in the spring of 1998, the decision was made that despite strong sentimental attachments, it was time to consolidate the names. Downeast Energy became the single name for all the heating companies and the gasoline division. Downeast Building Supply was chosen for the building materials store. Our former banner was incorporated into our tagline, "Good friends for all seasons."

After almost 100 years, customers still come first

Besides the name, nothing else has changed. It is still the same family owned Maine company. Dick and Bob are still very much involved in the business, as well as four members of the next generation. John Peters is at the helm as President. A team of over 400 employees work around the clock to provide over 40,000 customers with heating oils, propane, heating equipment, and building supplies.

One thing hasn't changed since 1908: we still put our customers first. At Downeast Energy & Building Supply, getting the job done quickly is second only to doing it well. We are committed to our employees and to the communities in which we live and do business. We are a growing company, but we'll never outgrow the fast, friendly, reliable service for which we've always been known.
